Written the year that Williams was 54, the age her mother was when she died and left Williams her life’s journals (three shelves of them, and every last one was blank), it is essentially a collection of essays and vignettes. There are pieces about womanhood and family, marriage and community, friendship and motherhood and sex and nature and writing. It’s a book about what it is to have a voice, and how the ways we use and withhold our voice shape our lives and the world we live in. And somehow, for me, it has become about much more than that. In Williams’ words, I’ve found expression of my deepest questions, greatest fears, and most intimate thoughts. There’s this: “Solitude is a memory of water. I live in the desert. And every day I am thirsty.” And this. I know you will understand this: “From an early age I have experienced each encounter in my life twice: once in the world, and once again on the page.” The difference between perfectionism and striving for excellence has been an important lesson in the last few years of my life. I could spin my wheels writing pages about it, but why would I, when Williams has given me this? “Who wants to be a goddess when we can be human? Perfection is a flaw disguised as control.” This is meditation. It is poetry. It is an invitation. “Democracy demands we speak and act outrageously. We can change the world if our view is long and focused with friends drawn lovingly around the place we call home.” It is a revelation and a reflection. “How do you contain within a domestic arrangement a howling respect for the wild in each other?” This is a beautiful, powerful, important book, and it’s one I’ve been recommending widely, but I don’t expect it to do to everyone else what it is doing to me. Nothing I’ve ever read has done this to me. Is this what religious people feel when they pray, I wonder? Is this reading-as-spiritual-practice? Perhaps, though I don’t consider myself spiritual, really. A friend suggested the word transcendent, and that feels closer to right, but not entirely. I don’t feel that I am connecting with something higher, something more-than-me, so much as I feel like I amthis book iscalling forth something that is profoundly interior, something that is wholly of me. Just writing about the experience makes me feel naked. I read for many reasons, not the least of which is to learn and be challenged, and in my life as a reader I’ve encountered many books that fit the bill. But none has ever held up a mirror for me in quite this way. Williams’ words didn’t just articulate things I’ve been thinking and talking about in my personal life; they changed the way I conceptualized those conversations and how I participated in them. I spoke different words than I would have had I not read this book, and subsequently, some of the closest relationships in my life have taken new shapes. Isn’t it remarkable that a book can do that? Media Paper In the news today, especially on the internet, issues written that are written about are going to have a certain bias. One of the reasons is because anyone can have website if they have a computer and the proper software. Therefore instead of getting one opinion, or one outlook on stories, news, debates etc., you can get both sides of the story and therefore make your opinion. On the four outlets of these stories you will see how they treat stories differently, or in some cases don't even carry them. The minute you load up the MSNBC website you can clearly see that they have money. There site is very well thought out they give you options for local news and have pictures and the news is updated hourly. Same with the CBS mainstream website. They have advertisements options and it's a colorful, flashy site, showing they spared no expense. In opposition when you got to motherjones.com and world net daily you can tell that it's a small corporation or even homegrown. Its very plain but straight to the point. It's not that it's a bad web page its not nearly as flashy or professional. It has its options laid out with other web links as opposed to huge advertisements. So already the general appearance of the site themselves show a great contrast. When I load up the two mainstream sites the first thing I see is "Sydney 2000" then on their sidebars I see "News" stories. I see issues about the campaign; Oil prices and still we talk about Jean Bonnet Ramsey. When I load up Mother Jones I first see the title and the phrase "News for the skeptical citizen". Directly below the Top story now links to click on to, no Olympics to by-pass. There it is the top story, "The Kids Who Could Topple Milosevic" an article about the general strike occurring until Milosevic admits defeat in the election. There is also video with a Serbian citizen who "dared to say what' really happening." Now, you can also find this story on MSNBC and CBS news but you might have to scroll down a bit or go through a few tabs to get the entire story. The video that CBS shows is a report from Alan Pizzey. You can clearly see the difference in how this particular article was handled. This is an issue about the minority trying to fight to have Milosevic admit defeat and resign. Though the way it was handled by the mainstream sites was very nonchalant. Down at the bottom the page with little article to look at. It clearly show the Elite Democracy not really paying attention to a very popular belief, and in comparison to the multimedia. On the alternative page you have an interview with a young Serbian citizen saying her opinions and risking getting into a trouble, popular perspective. In comparison to CBS who has Alan Pizzey an analyst giving "his" opinion on the situation, elite perspective. So you can clearly see that what the alternative or popular sites find important, the elite sites do not. So what do the elite sites show the most interest in? Elections, on CBS.com there is half a page on the first page devoted to elections it also gives you 20 different options to find out more about them. You can see that since the Elite democracy feels that effects them most that is what there going to publicize the most. You can truly see the difference in sites the elite media concentrates on things that directly affect them and big issues like elections and Olympics. Whereas the alternative sites could care less about Elections, and Olympics.They realize there is more going on out there that affects the citizens, the people, the popular democracy.

The Bengal Region Bengal is a region in the northeastern Indian Subcontinent, defined by the river delta of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers. This rich agricultural land has long supported one of the densest human populations on Earth, despite the danger from floods and cyclones. Today, Bengal is divided between the nation of Bangladesh and the state of West Bengal, India. In the larger context of Asian history, Bengal played a key role in ancient trade routes as well as during the Mongol invasion, British-Russian conflicts, and the spread of Islam to Eastern Asia. Even the distinct language, called Bengali or Bangla - which is an eastern Indo-European language and a linguistic cousin of Sanskrit - spread throughout much of the Middle East, with about 205 million native speakers. In the 16th century, European traders began to arrive at Bengals port cities, bringing with them western religion and customs as well as new goods and services. However, by 1800 the British East India Company controlled the most military power in the region and Bengal fell back to colonial control. Around 1757 to 1765, the central government and military leadership in the region fell to BEIC control. Constant rebellion and political unrest shaped the course of the next 200 years, but Bengal remained - for the most part - under foreign rule until India gained independence in 1947, taking with it West Bengal - which was formed along religious lines and left Bangladesh its own country as well. Current Culture and Economy The modern-day geographic region of Bengal - which encompasses West Bengal in India and Bangladesh -   is primarily an agricultural region, producing such staples as rice, legumes, and high-quality tea. It also exports jute. In Bangladesh, manufacturing is becoming increasingly important to the economy, particularly the garment industry, as are remittances sent home by overseas workers. The Bengali people are divided by religion. Around 70 percent are Muslim due to Islam first being introduced in the 12th century by  Sufi  mystics, who took control of much of the region, at least in terms of shaping government policy and national religion; the remaining 30 percent of the population is mostly  Hindu.

About 95% of the commercials that children see are for foods filled with sugars and fats. Children are bombarded with images of fast food by media advertising. Most Americans understand the marketing strategy of McDonald's -- appealing to the young. From an early age children are lured into McDonald’s by promotions of toys, actions figures, yummy food packaged into Happy Meals, and small on site playgrounds. The food is fast, comparatively cheap, and hot. In the film Spurlock interviewed a family in front of the White House and asked them to recite the Pledge of the Allegiance. In 1972, we spent 3 billion a year on fast food - today we spend more than 110 billion. Ironically Americans spend all kinds of money trying to lose weight each year, but need to concentrate on exercise, eating healthy, and cutting out fast food. Overweight Americans need to empower themselves and stop talking about being fat, and get moving on some simple solutions like eating less and moving more.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  After this movie was shown at a film festival McDonalds stopped super sizing 6 weeks later and introduced the â€Å"Go Active!† meal. The results on Spurlock may have been extraordinary on how quickly he gained weight and how his body and health were slowly deteriorating, but this shows why so many Americans are overweight and the way they are. Agriculture in Nepal

The major economic source of the majority of the families in our country is agriculture. More than 70% of our human resources are involved in agriculture and this sector provides for nearly 40% of the gross domestic product. Thus agriculture is the major occupation, main enterprise and the major lifestyle of the country. The unit of the agricultural system in our country currently is a family. If we take a general representative example we see that the enterprise has familial investment, and the products of the enterprise are consumed in the family itself, and the products do not have access to the markets.Once in a while, if the production of the family exceeds the consumption it is obviously difficult for a family to find the markets, transport the products to the markets if they find one, and bargain for profits, and for the security of their farm or animal products. To add to that competitions with established national and international enterprises leads to economic failures whic h have interrupted the few efforts of enterpreneurship that were tried. With both remnants of the century-old systems and the sparks of modern agriculture systems seen, the major trends of the national agricultural behaviour, systems and production are as follows:1. Investment: The major share of investment on agriculture are occupied by land and human labour. Technology, irrigation, infrastructure development, and provision of chemical fertilizers are out of imagination and potentials for a family, and the government also is still to concentrate on this issue. Also a sizable number does not even have access to cultivable land and thus cheap human labour is all they can sell, which further limits their ambitions for financial prosperity.Even families with land are devoid of modern technology due to economic and/or educational reasons. The main agricultural tools are still the centuries old local kuto, kodalo and halo. 2. Financial Unit: At present, the study of the Madhes, Pahad, Hi mal or any geography reveals that entrepreneurship is lacking in part due to land fragmentation . Due to lack of collective agricultural systems small familial financial units are created which are incapable of competing with larger established national or international financial enterprises.Product Diversification: Although agriculture has to favorable according to the geology and climate, the present trend is that all families across the nation from mountains to the plains and across the east-west channel grow the same varieties of crops and rear the same livestock. There is a trend of each family growing all it needs for subsistence rather than farming according to the microclimate. 4. Mentality: The educated youth do not wish to pursue agriculture as a career. There is a general lack of promoting entrepreneurship in the country in general.Research and Development: There is little co-ordination if any between the limited Agricultural School and Research Centres. Farmers can only regret when their whole harvest is destroyed by pests. Lack of proper testing and pretesting of hybrids continue to ruin the investments of the poor farmers. Furthermore, it has been a challenge to retain the agroscientists and technicians in the country as seen in other technical sectors. 6. Support Systems and Infrastructure: There is a poor state of credit provision to the farmers. The corporate banks are investing well below the policy requirement of 10% in agriculture.Also the interest on agricultural loans is very high compared to real state and automobile loans. There is virtually no provision of insurance and securitization on the agriculture sector. The lack of supporting infrastructure needs no description, there are no adequate rural roads, storage facilities and cold-stores are a rarity and demand for the required electricity facilities is unmet. The focus of social and economic life of our country, the agriculture sector is still family-based, subsistent and non-profess ional. Therefore it has to be replaced to develop a technical, collective and entrepreneurial system of agriculture.

Satirizing Renaissance Humanism In Dr. Faustus In Dr. Faustus, Christopher Marlowe has vividly drawn up the character of an intelligent, learned man tragically seduced by the lure of power greater than he was mortally meant to have. The character of Dr. Faustus is, in conception, an ideal of humanism, but Marlowe has taken him and shown him to be damned nonetheless, thus satirizing the ideals of Renaissance Humanism. M. H. Abrams A Glossary of Literary Terms defines Renaissance Humanism, stating that some of the key concepts of the philosophy centered around the dignity and central position of human beings in the universe as reasoning creatures, as well as downplaying the animal passions of the individual. He demonstrates an admirable complexity of narration as he weaves these grand-seeming gestures of the power of the individual in with the essential damnation that walks hand-in-hand with man.
